Language
In some circumstances, the success or failure of engagement will depend on the level of attention given to language. This applies both in the context of natural languages – for example where researchers using English are working with research subjects who speak another, perhaps not internationally known – and where the mix of technical terminology and colloquial speech does not sit well. Failing to make sure that language issues are addressed implies a lack of interest in communication which is likely to be perceived as a lack of respect by those who fell excluded as a result.
