Abstract
This short report from NESTA sets out four core reasons why public engagement with scientific research is desirable and then suggests various ways it could be done more vigorously, and explains the principles on which it should be based. It argues in favour of structured well-designed processes - on the basis that without clarity of purpose it is easy for engagement to become misleading or unproductive. It therefore sticks somewhat to the idea of engagement as a one-way process, initiated by decision makers. How groups with legitimate interests in researtch outcomes can advocate to influence what happens is not considered.
