This book looks at the introduction and use of new information technologies in several sectors of Senegalese society, showing some significant differences and innovations from the norms evolving in more industrialised countries at the same period. The book's development included a number of interactive events and newspaper features in Senegal which helped identify issues and potential writers for the different chapters. The process was led by Momar-Coumba Diop of the Universite Cheikh Anta Diop in Dakar. The book formed the major research element of a research project 'Information Technology and Social Development', which was supported by the UN Research Insitute for Social Development from 1999 to 2003. The chapters by Cheikh Gueye and Serigne Mansur Tall were translated into English, edited, and published in the Review of African Political Economy, issues 98 and 99 respectively.
