Abstract
This article offer a summary of a working paper on the concepts of community engagement in health research, prepared for the second annual meetin gof the Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative, along with a description of two other models for CE and of some case studies from Africa. It concludes that whilst there seems to be wide agreement on the importance of CE, there is little empirical data on its effectiveness. The article argues for a more consistent approach to collecting evidence on CE and developing guidelines for good practice.
